What does it mean jumping and twitching eye?

We have all had a twitching eye at some point in our lives. It is a completely natural situation that can happen while we watch TV, cook, or do any kind of activity. It is not a harmful condition but sometimes can be an indicator of serious health problems.

Scientists define it as an uncontrollable, repetitive blinking or eyelid spasm which can last from a few seconds to a few minutes. Sometimes it can occur for a couple of days on and off and then completely disappear.

The reason for eye twitching

In most of the cases, it is completely harmless and it can happen as a result of stress and fatigue. It can also be due to too much caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, irritation of the eye, allergies, and dry eyes.

Sometimes these spasms can be as a result of neurological disorders like blepharospasm or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s diseases). These conditions are more common in women than in men and develop in the middle or late adulthood.

This condition isn’t serious but if it is not treated it can lead to muscle spasms on the entire face, blurry vision, and light sensitivity. Sometimes these spasms can close the eyes for several hours.

If you notice these symptoms visit an ophthalmologist

  • Drooping upper eyelid
  • Swelled, red eyes with some discharge
  • Spasms on your entire face
  • Spasm that completely shuts your eye
  • If the spasm lasts more than a week

The doctor can see if there is any kind of neurological disorder. If the reason isn’t neurological then you should avoid stress and caffeine. You should also get enough sleep, relax, and try some massages or acupuncture.
