Essential PH-1’s Kernel Code Out, Factory Images Coming Soon

Essential is making good on its previous promise as the company recently released the kernel source code for the Essential PH-1 smartphone together with its Wi-Fi drivers. This means that third-party developers can now make use of the kernel source in order to create custom ROMs for the device, and technically speaking, the kernel’s release can also allow application developers to create better-optimized apps for the flagship. Additionally, Essential revealed that factory images for the handset will also be coming soon, though no exact launch windows have been given as of this writing.

The kernel source and Wi-Fi drivers for the Essential PH-1 smartphone are now available for download in a ZIP format directly from the manufacturer’s website. Given that users can already unlock the smartphone’s bootloader using the OEM’s official instructions, the custom ROM development scene for this device should, in theory, start gaining more grip sooner rather than later. A kernel is a computer program found at the core of any operating system and is designed to act as a communications link between different hardware components and applications themselves. Having said that, the kernel’s release won’t bring any direct improvements to consumers, though third-party app developers could technically utilize it in optimizing their applications at a hardware level.

The Essential PH-1 is the first handset created by former CEO of Android Inc. and founder and CEO of Playground Global, Andy Rubin. The device was built to offer a user experience close to that of stock Android OS, and following the smartphone’s release, the company announced that it will provide the necessary tools to support a healthy developer community. The Essential PH-1 features a 5.7-inch IPS LCD full-screen display with a resolution of 2,560 x 1,312 and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 system-on-chip housing eight Kryo CPU cores and the Adreno 540 graphics chip. The CPU is paired with 4GB of RAM and users have access to 128GB of non-expandable storage space as well. Its back panel accommodates a dual 13-megapixel camera with laser and phase detection autofocus, while an 8-megapixel sensor resides on its front panel. The Essential PH-1 was released with Android 7.1 Nougat and is planned for an upgrade to Android 8.0 Oreo in the near future.
