Google Camera NX Brings Most 5.1 Features To Nexus 5X & 6P

The latest version of Google Camera NX — an unofficial version of Google’s mobile imaging tool for the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P — brings the majority of features from Google Camera 5.1 to the 2015 Nexus-branded Android smartphones. While Google’s own app already introduced some of those additional functionalities to the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X earlier this month, Motion Photos and a number of minor tweaks were previously unavailable to the two smartphones for an unknown reason. XDA Developers Member “Charles_I” now rectified that state of affairs, much like he brought the Zero Shutter Lag (ZSL) mode to the older Nexus devices after Google debuted the feature as a Pixel exclusive last year.

The latest builds of Google Camera NX for the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P can be downloaded by referring to the banners below and people who just want to run a custom version of the app for Motion Photos can install the variant without ZSL, whereas the ZSL-enabled build is said to be identical to 5.0 one running on the 2016 Pixel and Pixel XL and includes experimental RAW support, as well as integrated warnings alerting you about a dirty lens. You’re also recommended to try the simpler variant of the app in case you’re unable to get the ZSL version to run for any reason, though neither app will likely work on third-party devices; even if you’re able to install one of Charles_I’s packages on a smartphone that’s not part of the Nexus or Pixel lineups, the software will likely crash the moment you launch it. Users who’d like to experiment with a somewhat stable version of Google’s imaging tool on third-party handsets are instead recommended to try the unofficial port of the app which was recently updated with support for RAW files and HDR+ but its performance still oscillates across various hardware.

Face Retouching is also part of both apps which can be downloaded below, though the same feature was already available in the official 5.0 version of Google Camera on the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X. The Portrait mode and AR capabilities debuting with the Pixel 2-series smartphones won’t ever be ported to their predecessors or any Nexus models due to the fact that they rely on hardware that Google only implemented into its latest offerings. Regardless, Motion Photos by themselves are a good enough reason to try Charles_I’s ports seeing how they’ll provide you with a simple method of creating short animations which can then easily be shared for entertainment and other purposes.
