Samsung Shares An Inside Look On The Note 8’s Development

Samsung Electronics recently sat down with two members of the Galaxy Note 8’s planning team and discussed some of the decision that went into creating this latest flagship device. In the interview, Samsung’s Cue Kim and BJ Kang talked about how the planning process for the device was affected by the previous incidents surrounding the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, and further elaborated on what were the most important aspects to consider when choosing new features to add to the latest flagship.

According to BJ Kang, after the unfortunate Samsung Galaxy Note 7 debacle, the company reflected on the core features required by Note users and decided to create the “most innovative” Galaxy Note model to date as a reward for the loyalty of its customers. Therefore, the product planning process for the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 was ‘far more intense than ever before’ and this led to an extended assessment period as well as a careful evaluation of the product following the company’s new 8-Point Battery Safety Check quality assurance protocol. Cue Kim further added that the development team also contemplated on core benefits when determining what new features should be implemented in the new model, and this led the company to rely on research methods such as interviews and surveys in order to better understand how its customers use their Galaxy Notes and what they expect from a sequel. The research prompted the team to focus on enhancing the camera experience, the S Pen, and the large 6.3-inch Super AMOLED display. According to Cue Kim, Samsung Electronics generally develops new technologies over the course of a few years, during which the company closely observes the needs of consumers and determines whether the technology they’re working on can meet those demands. The technology is applied only when the timing is right, and apparently such was the case with the Samsung Galaxy Note 8’s new dual camera setup.

When asked who are the target consumers for the Samsung Galaxy Note series, Kim revealed that although the team initially felt like the original Note would best fit business professionals, in recent years the target audience continued to expand and incorporate a wider variety of customers who value productivity, creativity, and entertainment. In particular, millennials seem to be the most drawn to the Note series for its high-performance camera and communication customization tools. On the other hand, Kang adds that various features available with the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 are useful for business professionals, exemplifying the App Pair feature and Screen off memo. As for the next Samsung Galaxy Note model in line, the team revealed that it took no time off after ending the development on the Note 8 despite the challenging process, and instead it is already trying to determine how to approach the next model’s development while looking into ways to further improving features such as the S Pen.
