AutoInput Tasker Plugin Can Now Mimic OnePlus 5T’s Face Unlock

The beta version of the AutoInput plugin for Tasker was recently updated with support for Auto Dismiss Keyguard which not only gives you the option of automatically dismissing your lock screen under certain conditions but can actually be used in conjunction with Trusted Face, an existing facial recognition feature of Android that OnePlus appears to have perfected with the recently released OnePlus 5T. While AutoInput’s implementation can’t be expected to work as seamlessly as Face Unlock does seeing how the latter was specifically optimized for the front-facing camera of the OnePlus 5T, the short video demo of the functionality shared by the plugin’s developer João Dias suggests that Trusted Face support can be a relatively smooth solution for unlocking one’s device, at least under certain conditions.

The video that can be seen below wasn’t taken in a particularly brightly lit room and yet still worked as expected, indicating that Auto Dismiss Keyguard can work reasonably well with Trusted Face in most scenarios. The final attempt depicted in the video is said to have been failed on purpose so that users know what to expect in regards to how the plugin will behave if they aren’t looking at the smartphone. The service appears to be the currently best way for owners of other smartphones to come close to the performance of Face Unlock on the OnePlus 5T which is advertised as being capable of recognizing you in only 0.4 seconds. As suggested by the video from Mr. Dias, AutoInput’s newly introduced solution doesn’t appear to take much longer than that to work.

Auto Dismiss Keyguard requires Android 7.0 Nougat or a later version of Google’s operating system to run and is currently being tested as part of the latest beta build of AutoInput, with no concrete availability date yet being given for a stable version of the feature. Facial recognition solutions are expected to become a more important part of high-end smartphones in 2018, especially after Apple took a convincing lead in the segment with FaceID that debuted on the iPhone X. Samsung is said to be working on improving its related technologies that it’s hoping to implement into the upcoming Galaxy S9 lineup and many other Android device manufacturers are presently believed to be following suit.
