Android Auto Officially Coming to Four 2018 Nissan Models

The Android Auto website has officially updated the Nissan page to show the four 2018 models that will be getting Android Auto support when they launch. This includes the 2018 Altima, Leaf, Maxima and Rogue. All of which will be announced fairly shortly, likely at either the North American International Auto Show in January or a few months later at the New York International Auto Show – which are the two big automotive tradeshows to start out the new year.

Currently, Nissan does not have any models on the road with Android Auto, so this is going to be the auto makers first foray into Android Auto. Nissan has been apart of the Open Automotive Alliance for quite a while, but it has taken its sweet time in adding Android Auto to its lineup. Which isn’t a surprise, as changes in the automotive industry do typically take a while to actually come to fruition. That’s just the nature of things with cars, seeing as people don’t buy cars as often as they do other tech like smartphones. But it is good to see that Nissan is finally jumping onto the Android Auto bandwagon, and hopefully the rest of its lineup won’t be far behind when it comes to Android Auto.

For those that might be unfamiliar with Android Auto, it’s basically a better, smarter infotainment system for your car. You’ll need to plug in your smartphone and then all of your apps that are compatible with Android Auto will be available on the big screen in your vehicle. This includes apps like Google Maps, Spotify, Google Play Music and much more. You do get Google Maps and Waze for navigation choices. But you also get a ton of choices for media, including a number of music streaming services, audiobook streaming services and even podcatchers. So you are able to listen to your favorite podcasts, audiobooks and music in the car. You also have the ability to take calls and reply to text messages with the voice commands available for Android Auto with the Google Assistant. So it’s a much better experience than the infotainment system that is already in the vehicle.
