Best VR Headsets – December 2017

The holidays are over and many consumers who were interested in VR might have received a new headset as a gift. If you did, then you’re likely already knee deep in VR content and are looking to continue enjoying that content as much as you can while you have the extra free time. If not, there are plenty of great VR headsets to choose from and if you’re unsure where to start, then you can check out the list below for some suggestions of the top VR headsets worth considering.

Google Cardboard

Google’s Cardboard viewer continues to find a spot on our list of top VR headsets for more than a couple of reasons, but the main ones are because it’s inexpensive to pick up and because it’s compatible with a wide range of different smartphones. It’s also got a huge amount of content that you can check out with it on the Play Store so if you’re looking to dive in for little money and have a large library of apps and games to experience, this is the way to go.

Homido 3D VR Glass With VR Lens

Just like the Google Cardboard, these 3D VR Glasses from Homido are a nice option if you want something inexpensive and capable while also being compatible with a larger selection of devices. The difference here is that these aren’t made of cardboard, and instead have a slightly nicer feel to them since they have a more heavy duty build quality thanks to the use of plastic as the material. That said, they are also built off the Cardboard platform, meaning you can use every app that works with Cardboard with this headset.

AUKEY Cortex 4K VR Headset

Stepping things up a bit is the Cortex 4K VR headset from AUKEY. These are a bit more expensive so you’ll want to be prepared to shell out a few hundred bucks, and if you’re interested in seeing how they stack up you can check out our full review of them. Essentially these are similar to the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, and AUKEY even boasts that they will be compatible with content from both platforms.

Pico Goblin

The Pico Goblin might just be what you’re looking for if you want access to content that doesn’t require you to use your smartphone as the main driving power source for the headset. That’s because the Pico Goblin is a standalone option that is completely self-contained. It’ll run you a couple hundred, but then you won’t need a particular smartphone just to be able to use it.

Samsung Odyssey

Virtual reality is great but virtual reality and augmented reality is better, and that’s what you’ll be getting with the Samsung Odyssey, a mixed reality headset running on the Windows Mixed Reality platform. Complete with front-facing camera sensors and integrated audio tuned by AKG, the Odyssey is likely to be the best mixed reality headset available right now, and is definitely worth a look if you’re ok with the price tag.

Samsung Gear VR With Controller

Samsung’s Gear VR is yet again on this list and why shouldn’t it be? It’s a very capable headset and one of the best mobile options. In fact, it might just be the best mobile option as it does have the widest selection of content thanks to the software being done by Oculus, and it now comes with the controller for easy control and navigation of the user interface, not to mention it is usually available for $129 at retail, and sometimes less if you can find it on a deal. You will need a Galaxy phone to use it, though.

Oculus Rift

The Oculus Rift is one of the more popular PC-based VR headset options and while you do need a PC that will be able to handle the requirements to run the headset, if you’re in that boat then there is lots to love here. The Oculus Rift will have plenty of games and apps available with some of them being the best you can get your hands on, full of excellent and captivating graphics. The headset also comes with integrated audio, and controlling your content is simple with either the Oculus Touch controllers or an Xbox One controller, depending on the game or what you feel comfortable with.

Daydream View (2nd Gen)

If you’re not big on Galaxy devices and you prefer something from Google’s camp, then the new Daydream View is the headset to go for as it will support both generations of the Pixel device as well as a handful of other Android phones, including the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, so even if you do like either of those devices you can still opt for the Daydream View over the Gear VR, or pick up both if you prefer. The new Daydream View also comes with enhancements over the old one, like a magnesium heat sink to help prevent overheating of the phone, the new textured fabric material with three new colors, and even an optional top head strap.

HTC Vive

HTC’s Vive is the undisputed king of PC-based VR headsets for many people and with good reason – it’s backed by Steam and Steam is the undisputed king of PC gaming when it comes to platforms for buying games. With this you’ll find loads of games and apps for the Vive on Steam, and thanks to the sensors and camera on the front of the Vive, in addition to its room sensors, you’ll get an unparalleled experience that you have to try to believe. It’s the most expensive, but that higher cost comes with higher quality content and hardware.

PlayStation VR

Leading the charge in VR overall, or at the very least for some consumers, is the PlayStation VR, thanks to its high quality games that are looking every bit as good as some of those on PC, and it has a lower entry point in terms of cost as you can sometimes find it for lower than $300 and in bundles with a game inside the box. If you have a PS4 and you prefer to game on console, then this should be your VR headset of choice.
