Galaxy Note 8 In Verizon Gets November Patch, KRACK Fix

Verizon is now rolling out an update that will install the November 2017 Android security patch to the Samsung Galaxy Note 8. This security patch fixes six remote code execution vulnerabilities found in the media framework and the system portion of the operating system. Remote code execution vulnerabilities are the security issues that can be exploited by hackers in order to control the device from a separate location. In addition, Verizon is also rolling out a separate patch for the KRACK vulnerability. This exploit allows individuals to intercept or eavesdrop on data sent by the smartphone over the Wi-Fi network. It is also likely that the software update includes fixes to six vulnerabilities found in Samsung’s proprietary skin.

Subscribers of Verizon may select among a variety of methods in order to upgrade their smartphone. They may choose to wait until a notification appears stating that the device can now download the software upgrade, although it may take several days before all units receive the update. Another option is to trigger the installation process manually by going to the device settings and proceeding to the “Software Updates” menu. On the occasion that the user cannot download the software package using mobile data or Wi-Fi, they may connect the smartphone to a personal computer and utilize Samsung’s proprietary tool to install the update. It is important that people verify if the device has enough free space in the internal flash storage in order to temporarily keep the software package. The user should check if the handset has at least 50% battery life remaining before installing the update. The files and images stored in the handset should be backed up to a personal computer or a microSD card to prevent loss of data.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 was launched by the South Korean smartphone manufacturer in August 2017. The US variant of the smartphone is powered by the Snapdragon 835 chipset, which is comprised of an octa-core Kyro 64-bit CPU and the Adreno 540 GPU. The handset includes 6GB of RAM and it is available with 64GB, 128GB, or 256GB of internal flash storage. The rear cameras of the device are equipped with two 12-megapixel sensors while the front-facing shooter has an 8-megapixel snapper. To keep the lights on, the handset has a 3,300mAh non-removable battery. It ships with Android 7.1.1 Nougat pre-installed, although Samsung’s proprietary skin, the Samsung Experience UI, runs on top of Google’s operating system.
