New Devil May Cry Game Coming To Android As An Action RPG

A new Devil May Cry mobile game is in the works for Android and iOS, with Capcom reportedly licensing its famous IP to Yunchang Game, a Chinese studio with several role-playing games in its portfolio. Much like the company’s previous creations, the upcoming title that’s said to be marketed as Devil May Cry: Pinnacle of Combat will be an action RPG that will attempt to combine the fast-paced, combo-based action that’s a hallmark of the series with a character leveling system and multiplayer. The game has already been listed on the TapTap app store where users can now pre-register to be notified when it’s released. While the most specific availability window currently attached to Devil May Cry: Pinnacle of Combat is “2018,” the fact that the game’s listing is already live might be indicative of a spring release.

There’s still no word on whether the first Devil May Cry game for Android smartphones and tablets is meant to eventually launch in the West, localized in English. While Yunchang’s portfolio would suggest the title will remain exclusive to the Far Eastern country, the popularity of the series is a major global opportunity that the studio may not want to pass up on, provided that its licensing agreement with Capcom encompasses the full rights to the game, i.e. that the company is able to release it wherever it wants. Alternatively, Capcom may localize and publish Yunchang’s game on its own and could be using China as a test market. While the Devil May Cry franchise has yet to make its way to contemporary handsets, a Java game titled Devil May Cry 3D was already released for J2ME-based feature phones in 2008, featuring short, episode-like missions suitable for playing on the go. Even though the game received some critical acclaim, it was never a large commercial success, with Java mobile gaming always being an extremely niche market, especially in the context of 3D action games.

The upcoming title is said to be made with the Unity 3D engine and will feature an online component encompassing both one-on-one battles versus other players and larger, team-based clashes. No details on the game’s business model have yet been disclosed, though the nature of mobile ARPGs suggests Devil May Cry: Pinnacle of Combat is likely to be a freemium title with optional in-app purchases and ads. Interested users able to sign up for the TapTap digital marketplace can pre-register their interest in the game by referring to the banner below.
