Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Gets Dec. 2017 Android Security Patch

Samsung started distributing the December Android security update for the Galaxy S7 Edge, with the new software package now hitting unlocked international variants of the device in Europe. The firmware began rolling out on a global level shortly after being introduced by wireless carriers in the United States and should also be coming to international versions of the flat-screen Galaxy S7, though no reports of the other member of Samsung’s 2016 flagship family receiving it have yet emerged. The newly introduced upgrade is relatively small in size as it weighs only 25.6MB and should only take several minutes to install so you may not even need to push it back to an overnight installation once you receive the notification prompting you to download it.

Following the upgrade, you’ll be able to identify the presence of the new firmware by the build number NRD90M.G935FXXS1DQL1. The software package ships with Samsung’s generic changelog that mentions the possibility of it including new bug fixes, performance optimizations, and features, but doesn’t guarantee the presence of any of them. No additional functionalities are apparent following the installation and if the update does introduce fixes and improvements, they’re likely incremental in nature, especially given how compact the entire package is. For reference, the average security upgrade for the Galaxy S7 Edge is approximately ten times the size of the newly released one.

The arrival of the December security patch for the Galaxy S7 Edge marks the second time Samsung updated the international model of its 2016 flagship in just six weeks and is indicative of an improvement in regards to the company’s software support practices. Since its release, this particular model usually received updates every two to three months and often skipped two sets of patches at a time before receiving a third one. Even though it’s slowly nearing the end of its official support cycle that’s scheduled next year following the launch of an Android 8.0 Oreo build for the handset, the frequency of security patches issued for the Galaxy S7 Edge is actually increasing, at least as far the international variant of the device that’s directly updated by Samsung is concerned.
