Samsung Galaxy S9’s DeX Dock Is Actually A Pad: Rumor

The second-generation Samsung Desktop Experience (DeX) station that the company is presently developing for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus won’t be a dock like the original device but a pad, Dutch tech blog Galaxy Club reported on Monday, citing anonymous sources. Its information is virtually identical to what known industry insider Evan Blass said about the new DeX station last month and it doesn’t elaborate on the actual design of what’s now believed to be called the DeX Pad. The second-generation gadget should be compatible with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 lineups that were also supported by the original DeX dock.

The DeX Pad should still connect to Samsung’s Android flagships via a USB Type-C port, though the actual mechanics allowing for such a link remain unknown since the design of the accessory doesn’t have the phone sitting up straight in the dock and should instead be lying flat. The reason for the orientation change is understood to have been prompted by Samsung’s ambition to provide users with the option of using the laid down device as a trackpad and a keyboard, which is possible as of Android 8.0 Oreo-based version of Samsung Experience that’s currently in beta and will be distributed to Samsung’s offerings in the coming weeks. The price of the DeX Pad is expected to be comparable to the one attached to the original Samsung DeX which retails for $150. The previously introduced accessory was offered as a pre-order bonus alongside the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8 Plus, and the Galaxy Note 8 in certain territories, and its successor is likely to be part of some promotional bundles as well.

The DeX station was met with a mixed response from both consumers and critics alike, though many agreed it’s the most viable phone-to-PC solution ever created. Samsung appears to be adamant to continue pushing this type of smartphone accessories going forward and may eventually end up supporting more handset models with its DeX-branded products. The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus are expected to be announced in the first quarter of the year and may already be teased at CES 2018 which is starting in mid-January, according to recent reports.
