The Yeelight Voice Assistant Is Xiaomi’s New Smart Speaker

The Yeelight Voice Assistant is Xiaomi’s new smart speaker which is said to be powered by dual AI systems, believed to be Microsoft’s Cortana and Amazon’s Alexa virtual assistants. The use of Cortana inside would likely be a move made due to the partnership between Xiaomi and Microsoft to use some of Microsoft’s services inside some of Xiaomi’s products. The use of Alexa, if the Voice Assistant is indeed powered by Alexa as well, opens up the device to a whole lot more capabilities as many of today’s smart home products are compatible with Alexa, including some of Yeelights other smart home products, so Alexa would make sense.

The Yeelight Voice Assistant even looks like Amazon’s Echo Dot smart speaker, save for a few key details like the 5th button in the middle of the speaker’s top, which is reportedly designed to allow consumers to mute the mic when they no longer want the speaker to capture surrounding noise, a feature which the Echo Dot does not have. The holes for the speaker are also a bit different, but beyond those two details everything else is pretty much identical, right down to the price, which is officially 199 Yuan or roughly $30 USD.

The Yeelight Voice Assistant is a 2-watt speaker with six microphones embedded so it can pick up the user’s voice more easily. The speaker also boasts a long-range voice activation capability thanks to what Xiaomi is calling an advanced voice wake-up algorithm, which it says allows the user to wake the speaker up from up to a 5-meter distance by speaking to it. This is in addition to fitting the Voice Assistant with echo reduction technology. As this is a smart speaker it doesn’t need a whole lot of performance power from the hardware. Powering this little device is a Cortex A53 quad-core processor with just 256MB of RAM and an equal amount of internal storage space, likely for caching personal preferences or other specific user details. Right now there’s no mention of the device launching outside of China, but those within China should be able to get their hands on the Yeelight Voice Assistant by the end of next month. While it’s not listed to come the U.S., it is worth noting that some of Yeelight’s other smart home products, such as smart LED bulbs, a touch sensor dimmable bedside lamp, and a motion sensor light, are all available on Amazon’s U.S.-based website, shipping from and being sold by Amazon officially, so there is a chance that this will be available in the U.S. at some point as well.
