Alexa Video Calling & Messaging Comes To Tablets

Alexa video calling and messaging has come to tablets so consumers no longer need to own an Echo speaker like the Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Show, or Echo Plus to talk to people in their contacts lists. While it is still possible to make calls and send messages through those speakers if you have them, now that support is available on tablets you can make those calls from anywhere even if you’re still in the home and happen to be in a different room than the speaker. What’s more is that it becomes super convenient to ask Alexa to make calls or send messages when you’re out and about if you have the tablet on you.

Amazon has enabled support for its own lineup of Fire tablets, though it has to be a Fire tablet that is at least fourth generation or later. It’s not just Fire tablets which get this software update to include the the feature, though. It’ll be possible to ask Alexa to make voice calls or send messages from other Android tablets and from iOS tablets as well so long as users have the most recent version of the Alexa app installed on those devices to make use of the calling and messaging feature. The tablets will need to be running on Android 5.0 or later, or iOS 9.0 or later to benefit, so there are restrictions for software here too, but it’s unlikely that many people will run into the issue of not being able to use the calling feature as most tablets from both platforms are running on at least those versions of software mentioned.

In addition to the tablets making calls and sending messages the updated Alexa app also allows those tablets to be used for dropping in on Echo devices from around the home should you need to listen in and be able to communicate without actually placing a call. Beyond having a compatible tablet and having the most recent version of the Alexa app, you’ll need to import your contacts to the tablet as well so that when you ask Alexa to call someone it has the contacts list to pull from. The updated version of the app should already be available too.
