Report: AT&T Watch Is A $15/Month Streaming Service Without Sports

AT&T is reportedly getting ready to launch a new streaming service that would be priced at just $15, but would not have any sports content. This service is reportedly going to be called “AT&T Watch”, and will be effectively a new service, and not part of its DIRECTV NOW streaming service. This comes from reporters that are in attendance for AT&T’s trial with the Department of Justice. AT&T’s CEO, Randall Stephenson announced during his testimony today that the company would be launching a new skinny bundle in the coming weeks, called AT&T Watch.

AT&T Watch is an interesting product for AT&T right now, and it may be the company kissing up to the Justice Department so that the merger with Time Warner is approved. But considering the fact that it is supposedly going to be a new product, and not part of DIRECTV NOW is a rather interesting move. This could be a way for AT&T to bring in more users, as a $15/month service is definitely easier to jump into than $35 for DIRECTV NOW. Of course, there’s not a whole lot known about AT&T Watch right now, but according to Stephenson, it will be launching in the coming weeks, so we should hear more pretty soon.

However, Wells Fargo analyst Jennifer Fritzsche stated in a note today that AT&T Watch will be available to everyone, but it will be free to AT&T’s wireless subscribers. Something similar to what Verizon has done with Go90 – though Go90 is free and ad-supported, but data is free for Verizon customers. This would really help AT&T pick up more customers on AT&T Watch, seeing as it is the second-largest wireless provider, so if even a small percentage of its wireless customers do sign up for AT&T Watch, that’s still a pretty sizable market share for AT&T. It’s likely that AT&T is planning to compete with Sling TV with this new AT&T Watch service. As Sling TV has been running ads on how it is cheaper than DIRECTV NOW, PlayStation Vue and YouTube TV, with a starting price of $20. Though it’s likely that AT&T will have more channels available for the $15 price point.
