MediaTek Details Its New Helio A22 Mobile Processor

The MediaTek Helio A22 processor was kind of announced along with the Xiaomi Redmi 6A earlier this week, as that is the SoC that fuels that phone, but we did not have all the necessary info when it comes to the Helio A22, at least not until now. MediaTek has just released a detailed spec sheet of the Helio A22 processor, which reveals pretty much all the necessary info when it comes to that SoC.

First and foremost, it is worth noting that this is a 64-bit quad-core processor which was built using a 12nm manufacturing process (TSMC’s FinFET technology). The only piece of info that is missing in MediaTek’s spec sheet is the exact version of the IMG PowerVR GE-class GPU version. In any case, the Helio A22 comes with support for HD+ displays with display ratios up to 20:9. The Helio A22 features four ARM Cortex-A53 cores with MediaTek’s CorePilot, and a flexible LPDDR3 / LPDDR4X memory controller. MediaTek claims that the Helio A22’s CPU performance is 30-percent faster than ‘the direct alternative’, which should be the Snapdragon 425, even though that part is not mentioned. In addition to that, MediaTek also claims that the Helio A22’s GPU is 72-percent faster than the competition, while this processor supports 13+8-megapixel dual camera setups, or a single 21-megapixel camera setup. Camera setups with lower megapixel counts are also supported, of course.

The Helio A22 comes with MediaTek NeuroPilot support, while it features Face ID as well, and the same goes for smart photo albums. This processor also supports all common AI frameworks, and Android Neural Networks API (Android NNAPI). The Helio A22 also sports 4G LTE WorldMode modem, MediaTek TAS 2.0 smart antenna technology, and standards such as eMBMS, HUPE, Band 71, and advanced IMS. 4-Satellite multi-GNSS (GPS, GLONASS, Beidou, Galileo) is also included, and the same goes for support for Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi (802.11ac). MediaTek said that we will see more budget smartphones powered by the Helio A22 later this year, which was to be expected, as this is an entry-level SoC, and it is inferior to the Helio P22 (which fuels the Xiaomi Redmi 6), though you probably knew that already.
