Upcoming Chromecast Tap Gesture Support Could Enable Gaming

Upcoming Chromecast tap gesture support could enable gaming capabilities for Google’s streaming device. A recent report suggests that Google might be planning to implement the capability for users to play games with Chromecast by way of tap gestures. Though Chromecast doesn’t currently support tap gestures there is code in the Chromium Repository that discusses adding the function.

Worth noting, is that games via Chromecast have technically already been a thing since the original Chromecast was released. There were numerous games released for the Android platform with Chromecast support that would allow people to stream the game interface to the TV that Chromecsat was connected to and interact with it via their phones’ display. Cardcast is one such example, which is a clone of the Cards Against Humanity game. This being the case any gaming capabilities that would come from tap gestures being added would be different from this. There isn’t much detail in the Chromium Repository that gives way to exactly what these features would be used for but there is a short description of the gestures themselves.

According to the entry in the repository the gestures would be attached to the root window and include tap, tap down, long tap, and long press gestures. The entry doesn’t elaborate on this at all so it’s not entirely clear how Google intends these to be incorporated. One suggestion points to the tap gestures being implemented for the upcoming Chromecast model that will have Bluetooth support included, which is to be the same model as the currently available Chromecast unit but with Bluetooth. If this were the case, the possibility is such that Google may use the tap gestures for controls for games via Bluetooth while the content itself would be streamed via Wi-Fi. Again there’s not much information that explains Google’s intention here, but it’s likely that more information will pop up before these gestures reach the device.
