Huawei, Honor Schedule Updates For Older Handsets To Oreo

Huawei and its subsidiary, Honor, have reportedly now confirmed a full list of devices which will be receiving the update to Android 8.0 (Oreo). In total, there are three Huawei handsets now expected to see the update. That includes at least one smartphone, the Huawei P9, which had previously been confirmed as a device that would not be receiving the update. That was confirmed by a customer care representative in the U.K. and hardware issues were cited as the reason behind the decision. It’s possible that Huawei has since found a fix for those issues, that the representative was mistaken, or that the update won’t be arriving in that region. In any case, the Huawei P9, Huawei P9 Plus, and Huawei Mate 8 are all said to be receiving the update to EMUI 8.0.

On the Honor side of things, the Honor 8 family of devices are first in line. That includes the Honor 8, Honor V8, and Honor Note 8. The Honor Play 6X is also shown to be getting the update. The latter of those devices is an interesting inclusion since it was first released way back in late 2016. As with the Huawei devices, the update for Honor’s handsets will bump the firmware up to EMUI 8.0 as well. Beyond that small amount of information, there’s been no clarification as to whether or not the updates will ship to all of the listed devices on the global scale. It wouldn’t be completely unheard of if the new software and features were limited to the two companies’ Chinese audience – possibly with a larger rollout following sometime later. That may very well be the case since the company has also said it will be pushing the updates in phases covering around 20,000 units per phase.

In the meantime, there’s been no indication for how long the phases of that rollout will last or whether the start of each successive phase will overlap. The size of the phases may be an attempt to avoid some of the issues other OEMs have run into with Oreo-based updates. Having said that, both Huawei and Honor are expected to begin rolling the updates out as of June 30.
