Sony Xperia XZ3 Rumored To Have A Single 48MP Rear Camera

The upcoming Sony Xperia XZ3 is supposedly shipping with only a single camera on the back of the device with a sensor size of 48 megapixels, new reports indicate, corroborating a recently leaked set of unofficial CAD renders showing the handset’s single main camera configuration as opposed to a dual-camera setup that was previously rumored. The new report is based on the sighting of a device carrying the model number H8416 that was spotted on GFXBench boasting a rear shooter with a 47-megapixel resolution.

While this particular camera feature of the soon-to-be-announced Xperia XZ3 remains unconfirmed, it is possible that we could be looking at the recently announced IMX586, Sony’s newest image sensor offering for smartphones claimed to be the first sensor to feature an ultra-compact pixel size of 0.8-micrometers. The image sensor features a resolution of 48 megapixels and provides the highest pixel count among image sensors targeted towards mobile devices. The increased resolution of the IMX586 sensor will allow smartphones to shoot high-resolution images even when using digital zoom, and the product’s compact size of 8.0-millimeters permits tech firms to incorporate the sensor into many smartphones. Since the latest report is based on a benchmark listing, there is a big chance that this could be the actual IMX586 sensor that Sony may be incorporating into its next-generation Xperia XZ3 smartphone, though the Japanese electronics giant has yet to confirm it.

In terms of design, Sony’s next-generation Xperia model will supposedly include a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and show off a glossy finish on the back panel. Rumors have it that the display may have thin side edges, though it may not be the case with the top and bottom bezels. Spec-wise, a number of hardware details pertaining to the device suggested differing screen sizes, though in any case, the panel is expected to have a resolution of 2160 by 1080 with an 18:9 aspect ratio. Under the hood, the phone is supposed to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chipset boasting a total of eight CPU cores – four of which operate at a frequency of up to 2.8GHz – and an Adreno 630 graphics processor. More official details are expected to follow once Sony hopefully unveils the Xperia XZ3 at IFA in Berlin next month.
