Justice Department To Meet With State AG’s Regarding Social Media

Recently, President Trump has been going after social media companies, saying that they are suppressing good coverage of him in search results and in news feeds. Now it appears that his Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, is getting serious about cracking down on these companies. Sessions had announced that he will be meeting with State Attorney Generals regarding this, and that is going to take place on September 25. This of course comes on the heels of Twitter and Facebook being in Washington DC to testify in front of Congress – where Congress is ripping Google for not sending anyone to testify.

Silicon Valley has been asking for regulation for the majority of 2018, not because they want it, but because they need it. Especially after what happened in the 2016 Presidential Election, and the Cambridge Analytica scandal that Facebook went through earlier this year. And now this meeting between Sessions and State Attorney Generals could open the can of antitrust worms for Facebook, Google and Twitter. Now Google, is no stranger to antitrust investigations. It has been fined countless times, and in fact the European Union recently gave Google the biggest antitrust fine ever, over the summer.

President Trump isn’t the only one claiming bias from these three companies, other Republicans have been stating that their online voices have been dampened from Facebook, Google and Twitter. Trump has even shown examples on his Twitter account where the same coverage for President Obama was at the top of search results, while his were further down and hidden for many. Now there are many reasons for that to have happened, but it does appear that these companies are silencing Republicans, and now with the Republicans running the White House, House of Representatives and the Senate, something’s going to get done. And it could result in more regulation for these companies.
